How to Choose a Mechanic

As an official Miami Bentley dealer, we know that owning a Bentley is an amazing experience, from start to finish. It begins when you first set foot in the beautiful Braman Bentley showroom, increases when you excitedly pull your Bentley into your driveway and is taken to even greater levels by the amazing work our auto service center performs to keep your luxury car in pristine operating condition.

We also know that not everyone can be lucky enough to own one of the world’s best luxury cars. There are times when a close friend or someone in the family may need service or repair work performed on something other than a Bentley. If that sounds familiar, keep reading for our advice on finding a trustworthy mechanic no matter what type of vehicle needs help.

What good is success if you can’t share it with family?

Imagine, if you will, a point in the near future when your family will have someone who is ready to hit the road in their first new vehicle. You’re a loving and fortunate relative who might be able to gift them a new vehicle -- but you also want to put them in something a tad less luxurious than your 2021 Bentley Flying Spur.

Either way, the right mechanic, whether it’s a franchised dealer or independent store, should make your driver’s ownership experience painless. (They probably won’t offer the amazing experience offered by our Bentley dealer near Aventura, but they’re not going to try to sell any blinker fluid either.) We’d like to offer guidance on finding a service facility that will take good care of the family’s newest driver, so check out these 4 tips for choosing a mechanic.

1. Start the search now

Proper preparation doubtlessly played a role in your success, and you’ll want your grandchild to be similarly prepared for any potential vehicle issues.

You may want to stick with a franchised new vehicle dealership if the vehicle is relatively new – especially if it’s covered under the original factory warranty. Work with them to locate a quality service technician well before any problems rear their ugly heads.

You may need to locate a trustworthy partner in their hometown or the home of their dream university, too. The search will make for a great time together, and they’ll appreciate your foresight when they’re able to quickly deal with a shaky steering wheel or worrisome new light on the dashboard.

2. Tap your network

Your business connections range far and wide, and we imagine you’ve rubbed shoulders with some dealership owners in your time. This is the perfect opportunity to reach out to a few of them, as you’re practically guaranteed to find a trustworthy mechanic for your family member to visit when vehicle trouble arises.

You should also ask for referrals from friends and coworkers. It can be comical at times, but it often seems just about everyone has a specific mechanic who they trust above all others. That person might be worth considering.

You could also get some interesting feedback and guidance from your insurance agent. Think about how many repairs those companies facilitate in any given year! They’re bound to learn which shops are trustworthy and which mechanics are cons.

3. Swing by the shop

Once you’ve located a few options for service facilities, we think a great step is to invest some time visiting them in person. (You may stand out if you show up in your Bentayga, so ride with a friend if you want to be a bit more inconspicuous.)

Take a good look at the facilities. Is the building clean? What about the service areas? Automotive repair is a dirty job, but a professionally run shop will keep things orderly at all times.

Introduce yourself to some of the staff and ask a few questions. Are they polite and professional? The attitude of the staff can be a great indicator of their dedication to their work. Poor attitudes can be reflective of poor work or a management team that doesn’t fully appreciate their staff.

4. Check the Certifications

Factory certifications for service technicians are essentially a guarantee if you choose to partner with a franchised new vehicle dealership. Those manufacturers want highly qualified technicians working on their customers’ vehicles, so you’ll rarely find an untrained person in their shops.

Be sure to look for Automotive Service Excellent (ASE) certifications if you are also considering an independent service facility or local mechanic. Those companies don’t have an international company training and watching over them as a new car dealership does, so the ASE certificate is a way for them to continue gaining education and showcasing their expertise.

Whether you partner with a new vehicle dealership or an independent service facility, try to pick one with a high share of Master Certified technicians. Those folks have the most practice and training and keeping that Master status requires ongoing development in their field.
