I had recently acquired a breathtaking, newly minted Continental GT Speed Convertible and was eager to take her on her maiden voyage. And what better destination to experience the ultimate alfresco GT driving experience in a Bentley than a trip to Key West?
Miami to Key West Logbook

The brilliant sun shone over sparkling azure waters. Rows of stately palm trees gently swayed in the warm, tropical breeze. Soaring oceanfront skyscrapers thrust heavenward to embrace the dawn. As it languished in my Miami driveway, the morning sun gleamed off my Continental GT Speed’s lithe and athletic body. With the top down, its opulent interior beckoned me to get behind the wheel, fire up its magnificent W12 engine, and begin my inaugural journey across the Florida Keys.
On the Road Again – For the First Time
I popped open the commodious trunk, its 8.3 cubic feet of cargo space offering more than enough room to include everything I needed for my journey. I settled into the supportive front seat and ran my hand across the supple leather. I looked forward to using the multi-mode massage feature to reduce fatigue on this long drive. Of course, the heated neck warmers wouldn’t be needed on this trip as the sun-drenched weather was picture perfect.
I engaged the Continental GT Speed’s prodigious W12 powerplant, gripped the substantive Alcantara sport steering wheel, and fired up the amazing 2200-watt Naim for Bentley sound system. I then cued up my favorite Jimmy Buffett playlist and departed for my first stop along the fabled 113-mile Overseas Highway, aka “The All-American Road.”

I headed south on Highway 1 from the urban bustle of Miami, soon arriving at Key Largo in my Bentley. What sold me on the Continental GT Speed Convertible was its remarkable driver-focused capabilities. With a mind-boggling 650 hp at my disposal, the 6.0- liter W12 TSI engine combined with all-wheel steering, Bentley Dynamic Ride, and electronic rear differential did not disappoint. The GT’s carbon-ceramic brakes were perfectly modulated. And the steering was precise and well-balanced. To say that driving this ultra-lux, two-door GT Convertible is an exhilarating experience simply doesn’t do it justice. “Transcendent” is more like it.
While in Key Largo, I enjoyed the aquarium at the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park and a hearty lunch at the homespun Doc’s Diner.
Driving toward Marathon, I passed through the kitschy and touristy town of Islamorada. It’s here that tourists can buy a bucket of bait and feed wild tarpon with their bare hands. As I needed all my digits to operate the Continental GT Speed’s cutting-edge infotainment system, I chose instead to revel in my new Bentley’s meticulously hand-crafted handiwork, such as its beautiful dark stained burr walnut interior finish, and exquisitely engineered diamond-knurled analog gauges.

I pointed Bentley’s flagship Convertible Grand Tourer ever westward as I motored in automotive bliss toward Marathon. I had just passed Duck Key when the weather turned a bit brisk. So, I engaged the GT Convertible’s “Z-fold” roof that deploys in a scant 19 seconds. The transformation from alfresco motoring to a supremely quiet oasis virtually devoid of road noise was astonishing. And delightful.
Arriving in Marathon, I parked my Continental GT Speed Convertible at the
Dolphin Research Center. As I got out to stretch my legs, out of the corner of my eye I could see people admiring my Bentley’s dazzling, forged 22-inch sport wheels done in a Dark Tint finish to match its captivating Dark Tint grille which complemented. But how could they not be mesmerized by this beautiful Bentley’s breathtaking exterior design and seductive silhouette?
A Bridge Over Ocean Waters

Finally, it was on to one of the highlights of my Key West journey: Traversing the remarkable and historic Seven-Mile Bridge. With little traffic in sight and surrounded by the bright turquoise ocean on either side, I used the Adaptive Cruise Control to settle into a comfortable cruising speed. The sound of the Bentley’s muscular W12 was almost imperceptible. It was as if I was driving on glass as I effortlessly glided across the waters in supreme comfort. As dusk fell, the Bentley Continental GT’s Active Lane Assist, Head-Up Display, and Night Vision safety technologies helped me confidently pilot me toward my ultimate destination of Key West.
Land’s End at Last – Logbook Epilogue
Arriving at Key West, I felt refreshed and invigorated rather than fatigued. I can only surmise that my new Continental Speed GT Convertible’s superlative luxury, soothing massaging seats, whisper-quiet ride, and effortless handling were somehow responsible.
I thought it fun to “play tourist” for a while and take in the sights, sounds, and attractions of this unique and historic destination. I looked forward to visiting Ernest Hemmingway’s Home and Museum, enjoying a refreshing libation and a slice of key lime pie at Sloppy Joe’s Bar, visiting the shops along Duval Street, and snapping a selfie at the marker for the southernmost point in the U.S.
But to be perfectly honest, what I looked forward to the most was the drive home in my new Bentley Continental GT Speed Convertible. Can you blame me?
